Space Cowboys (2000)
Space Cowboys (2000), an American adventure drama film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, tells the story of two U.S. Air Force pilots and aspiring astronauts- William ‘Hawk’ Hawkins and Frank Corvin. In 1958, while testing a modified Bell X-2, Hawk decides to attempt breaking speed and altitude records. However, the plane stalls and they are forced to eject, narrowly missing a Boeing B-50 Superfortress with navigator ‘Tank’ Sullivan. After landing safely on the ground, Frank throws a punch at Hawk but their fight is interrupted by flight engineer Jerry O’Neill. Their superior, Bob Gerson, reprimands Hawk before taking them to a press conference where he announces that space flight tests will now be conducted by the newly formed NASA instead of the USAF.
Fast-forward to the present day, where NASA has been given the task of preventing a Soviet communications satellite named IKON from crashing back to Earth due to loss of communication. The outdated electronics of the satellite are modeled after those of Skylab, which were designed by Frank. Bob, now a NASA project manager, asks for Frank’s assistance. Despite his dislike of Bob, Frank agrees on the condition that he can work with ‘Team Daedalus’ – comprising Hawk, Tank, and Jerry. In an effort to generate publicity, Bob plans to have younger astronauts shadow the four and eventually replace them before launch. However, when news of Frank’s team reaches the press, the Vice President insists they be included in the mission.
