Directed by Henry Hathaway, the story follows Jim Kimmerlee, owner of a salmon cannery, who reunites with his old friend Tyler Dawson after his hunting trip for seals. Nicky Duval, Jim’s sweetheart and proprietor of the local hotel, is also happy to see Tyler back in town. However, their cheerful reunion is dampened by the ongoing issue of stolen fishing traps. Determined to put an end to it, Jim finds himself in a feud with Red Skain, a Russian fisherman suspected of the thefts. Additionally, Di Turlon returns to town after years of city life and has trouble adjusting to the close-knit fishing community at first. However, as time passes, Di becomes romantically interested in Jim.
As the group pursues Red and his accomplices, Jim is dismayed to discover that Tyler has joined forces with them. In an attempt to catch the fish poachers red-handed, Jim enlists Nicky’s help to sabotage Tyler’s boat. However, Tyler manages to find another vessel and joins Red out at sea. A tense exchange of gunfire ensues between Jim and the thieves, resulting in two deaths and Tyler being wounded. After his friend comes to his aid following Red’s abandonment, a near-death Tyler realizes there is one final task he must complete. Despite his injuries, he bravely sets off on a boat to confront Red before blowing a loud whistle that triggers an avalanche, ultimately causing both men’s demise. Jim speaks highly of Tyler’s courageous sacrifice.
