Speak No Evil (2022)
Speak No Evil (2022) is a spine-chilling film directed by Christian Tafdrup, who also co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Mads. The story follows Bjørn and Louise, a Danish couple on vacation in Tuscany with their daughter Agnes. It is here that they meet Patrick and Karin, a Dutch couple with whom they strike up a friendship. However, things take a dark turn when they receive an invitation from the Dutch couple to visit their remote rural house in the Netherlands. Despite an eight-hour drive, the family accepts and arrives at their destination. As the first two days pass by, Louise begins to feel uneasy about her hosts’ passive-aggressive behaviors towards her vegetarianism, Abel’s congenital aglossia, and Karin’s frequent profanity.
The hosts extend an invitation to their guests for a dinner outing, but Louise becomes worried about leaving the children under the care of Abel’s babysitter, Muhajid. These concerns are heightened during the meal when Patrick questions her vegetarianism and he and his partner engage in public displays of affection while intoxicated. Following their manipulation of Bjørn into paying for dinner, Patrick recklessly drives with loud music playing and this disturbs Louise even more. He intrudes on her while she is showering and later witnesses them engaging in sexual activity. When Agnes asks to sleep with her parents, they brush her off and she ends up in bed with Patrick. Upon discovering Agnes asleep next to a naked Patrick, Louise wakes up her husband and they all leave, but soon return after Agnes realizes she has lost her beloved rabbit doll Ninus.
