Speechless (1994) is an American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Ron Underwood. In the gift shop of a Las Cruces, New Mexico hotel, two insomniac writers cross paths for the first time. They quickly engage in a dispute over the last box of sleep medicine available. Little do they know that they are both speechwriters for rival candidates in a New Mexico Senate election and end up falling in love. Julia works for Democratic candidate Lloyd Wannamaker while Kevin represents Republican candidate Ray Garvin. As they unintentionally influence each other’s work, their true professions are revealed when they are invited to speak at a school event. To everyone’s surprise, they engage in a heated verbal exchange on stage. Even as they continue to argue during their campaign speeches, no one else is aware of their blossoming romance and the conflict it brings as they struggle to balance love and politics.

Adding to the complexity are Kevin’s former spouse Annette, who was responsible for getting him his job on the Republican campaign trail, and Julia’s ex-fiancé Robert ‘Baghdad Bob’ Freed, a war correspondent known as ‘Mr. Flak Jacket’. Even though Julia had called off their engagement because she felt he prioritized praise over a partner, Robert unexpectedly shows up and expresses interest in rekindling their relationship. Meanwhile, during a meeting between Julia’s team and Kevin’s in his office (which he does not attend), Kevin obtains Julia’s planning materials and manipulates her candidate’s speech to make them appear foolish. That same evening, Julia meets with Kevin and reveals she is engaged again. He cautions her about being fired from her position before advising her to boost her candidate’s likability by arranging a rescue of a well-known missing bear cub that has been dominating the news.
