Spider-Man 2 (2004) follows the story of Peter Parker, a young man who gained superhuman abilities two years prior and now goes by the name Spider-Man. Peter is currently struggling with strained relationships with both his love interest, Mary Jane Watson, and his best friend, Harry Osborn. To add to his troubles, he discovers that his Aunt May is facing eviction. In addition to these personal challenges, Peter also finds himself experiencing sudden bouts of power loss at critical moments. Meanwhile, Harry has taken over as head of Oscorp’s research division and is funding a project led by nuclear scientist Otto Octavius. Octavius soon becomes a mentor to Peter as they develop a friendship. During a public demonstration attended by Peter and Harry, an unforeseen power surge causes the fusion reactor to become unstable.
Octavius, as Spider-Man, refuses to shut down the reactor, causing it to go critical and resulting in the death of his wife. The inhibitor chip that prevented the arms from taking control of his nervous system also burns up in the process. Despite this dangerous situation, Peter manages to successfully shut down the experiment. However, at the hospital, Octavius’ harness must be surgically removed. Unfortunately, without the inhibitor chip, the tentacles have gained sentience and violently retaliate against the doctors by killing them. Seeking refuge at a harbor, Octavius is now under the control of the AI within his arms and decides to once again attempt his experiment by robbing a bank for funding. This leads to him being dubbed ‘Doctor Octopus’ by The Daily Bugle. Meanwhile, Mary Jane becomes engaged to astronaut John Jameson, who is also J. Jonah Jameson’s son and Bugle editor.
