Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Spiderhead (2022) is an American science fiction psychological thriller film with a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The film is based on the dystopian short story “Escape from Spiderhead” by George Saunders, which was first published in The New Yorker. Set in a state-of-the-art penitentiary, Spiderhead conducts experiments on the effects of research chemicals. The subjects, who are technically prisoners of the state, have voluntarily signed up for the project with hopes of reducing their sentence time. Leading the program is Steve Abnesti, a sympathetic and hospitable overseer, along with his assistant Mark. Each prisoner has their own room and is responsible for daily chores, with no need for guard supervision. As part of the experiment, they undergo regular drug tests that alter their emotions and perceptions.

The following day, Steve brings Jeff into the observation room and informs him that the “higher-ups” have decided to administer a dose of the experimental drug to Heather, the younger of the two women. Although it will only last for 5 minutes, Jeff reluctantly agrees. To his horror, Heather commits suicide while under the influence of Darkenfloxx after damaging her MobiPak device. Witnessing this causes Mark to question their work at the facility. As Steve rushes out of the projection room, he accidentally drops his keys. Jeff takes this opportunity to unlock Steve’s desk compartment and discovers that there are no actual “higher-ups” – in fact, Abnesti Pharmaceuticals, Steve’s company, is running the prison. The names of the drugs were inspired by a bingo card.
