Spies Like Us (1985)
The American spy comedy film Spies Like Us (1985), directed by John Landis and starring Chevy Chase, tells the story of two men who dream of becoming secret agents. Austin Millbarge, a code breaker stationed in the dark basement of the Pentagon, longs to leave his unappreciated job behind. Meanwhile, Emmett Fitz-Hume, a wisecracking diplomat’s son, takes the foreign service exam under pressure from his peers. Despite attempting to bribe his way to success, Fitz-Hume resorts to cheating during the test after all else fails. Millbarge, on the other hand, was caught off guard by the exam due to his supervisor’s failure to give him proper notice. Now faced with potential failure and a future stuck in the depths of the Pentagon, Millbarge must find a way to succeed against all odds.
In order to divert attention from their more skilled team, Ruby and Keyes from the DIA enlist Fitz-Hume and Millbarge as expendable covert agents. The two are quickly promoted to GLG-20 Foreign Service Operatives and given minimal military survival training before being sent on an unspecified mission in Pakistan and Soviet Central Asia. At the same time, the primary agents are making their way towards their true objective: seizing a mobile SS-50 ICBM launcher in Soviet territory. Tragically, one member of the main team is killed while Millbarge and Fitz-Hume narrowly escape multiple enemy attacks. Eventually, they come across Karen Boyer, the sole surviving agent from the main team.
