Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), an American animated western film produced and distributed by DreamWorks Animation and DreamWorks Pictures, follows the story of a Kiger mustang colt named Spirit. As he grows into a stallion, Spirit becomes leader of his herd in the 19th-century American West. One night, he discovers tied-up horses and sleeping wranglers near his herd. Despite being captured by these men from a US cavalry fort, Spirit continues to resist their attempts at breaking him. In retaliation, the Colonel orders him to be tied to a post without food or water for three days. At the same time, a Lakota Native American named Little Creek is brought into the fort as a captive. With help from his friends outside the fort’s walls, Little Creek manages to secretly free himself from his bonds using a knife.
After three days, Spirit’s strength had significantly waned and the Colonel had managed to subdue him temporarily. With a hint of arrogance, the Colonel boasted about his ability to tame any wild horse. However, this only brought disappointment to the other captive horses. In a sudden burst of energy, Spirit threw the Colonel off and escaped from his captivity. Enraged and humiliated, the Colonel attempted to shoot Spirit in the head but was stopped by Little Creek who saved the magnificent horse. Together, they made a daring escape and freed the other captive horses in the process. As they rode back to Little Creek’s village, he and his fellow Lakotas lassoed Spirit with Rain, their pet mare. Despite Little Creek’s attempts at taming him with kindness, Spirit remained untamable. In a last-ditch effort to discipline him, Little Creek tied one end of Rain’s lead rope to Spirit’s and hoped she could calm him down. To everyone’s surprise, over time, Spirit fell in love with Rain despite not understanding her attachment to humans. Gradually, Little Creek and Spirit came to respect each other but it became clear that taming Spirit was not meant to be.
