Splash (1983)
Splash (1983) is an American romantic fantasy comedy film directed by Ron Howard. In 1964, eight-year-old Allen Bauer and his family are enjoying a boat tour at Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Fascinated by something below the surface, Allen jumps overboard despite not knowing how to swim. He then comes across a young girl who shares an inexplicable connection with him when they hold hands underwater. However, Allen is eventually rescued and separated from the girl. As no one else saw her, he starts to believe it was all just a near-death hallucination. It’s revealed that the girl actually is a mermaid as the boat pulls away. Fast forward twenty years and Allen is now co-owner of a wholesale fruit and vegetable business in New York City with his womanizing older brother Freddie.
Over the years, Allen’s relationships have all ended in failure as he unconsciously longs for the same connection that other couples seem to have. Feeling down after his most recent breakup, Allen decides to visit Cape Cod and while on a diving trip, he meets the quirky scientist Walter Kornbluth. In a strange turn of events, Allen falls into the ocean when his boat suddenly starts up again and is knocked out. Upon waking up, he realizes that his wallet has fallen onto the coral below. As he lies on the beach, a beautiful young woman approaches him but is unable to speak. She kisses Allen before diving back into the water where she transforms into a mermaid. While swimming underwater, she catches the attention of Kornbluth.
