Spotlight (2015)

Spotlight (2015) is a biographical drama film directed and co-written by Tom McCarthy. It follows the story of a group of journalists in Boston, who uncover a scandal involving sexual abuse within the Catholic Church. In 1976, two police officers discuss the arrest of Fr. John Geoghan for molesting children. An important church official meets with the victims’ mother, and an assistant district attorney enters to stress the significance of keeping this information from the media. Despite the severity of the situation, Geoghan is freed and no public statement is made. Fast forward to 2001, when Marty Baron takes over as managing editor at The Boston Globe and meets with ‘Spotlight’ team leader Walter ‘Robby’ Robinson. After reading about lawyer Mitchell Garabedian’s accusations against Cardinal Bernard Law for covering up Geoghan’s abuse, Baron prompts the Spotlight team to delve deeper into the story.
Journalist Michael Rezendes initially contacts Garabedian, but he declines to be interviewed. Despite being warned not to reveal his affiliation with the Spotlight team, Rezendes eventually convinces Garabedian to speak with him. As they dig deeper into their investigation, the team discovers a disturbing pattern of sexual abuse by multiple priests in Massachusetts, which has been systematically covered up by the Boston Archdiocese. Through Phil Saviano and his organization Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), they are led to expand their search beyond one priest to a total of thirteen. The team also consults with Richard Sipe, a former priest who has worked on rehabilitating abusive clergy members, and learns that his research indicates there may be approximately 90 abusive priests in Boston, accounting for 6% of all priests.
