Spy Game (2001)
The film Spy Game (2001), directed by Tony Scott and starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, follows the United States and China as they negotiate a major trade deal. As the President prepares to visit China to finalize the agreement, the CIA becomes aware of their operative, Tom Bishop’s, arrest in Suzhou. With only 24 hours until his execution, Bishop’s actions could jeopardize the deal. To avoid getting involved, a group of CIA executives turn to Nathan Muir, Bishop’s mentor and a retiring veteran agent. While supposedly discussing Muir’s relationship with Bishop, the executives are really looking for an excuse not to intervene on his behalf. Unbeknownst to them, Muir was given a heads-up about Bishop’s capture by Harry Duncan, a fellow veteran of the CIA stationed in Hong Kong.
He then proceeds to leak the information to CNN through Digby ‘Digger’ Gibson, his contact within MI6 also located in Hong Kong. Muir’s reasoning is that the pressure from public exposure would prompt American intervention. The plan hits a momentary setback when Deputy Director for Operations Charles Harker contacts the FCC and convinces them to retract the story as false. It is worth noting that Muir and Bishop have a long history, dating back to their meeting in 1975 during the Vietnam War where Bishop served as a Marine Corps Scout Sniper. In present day, Muir enlists Bishop for a mission involving the elimination of a high-ranking North Vietnamese military officer. Despite being compromised, Bishop and his spotter Tran are able to carry out the assassination successfully, even managing to take down an enemy attack chopper in pursuit.
