Staged (2020 — 2023)
Staged (2020–2023) is a British television comedy series that was filmed and set during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. Using video-conferencing technology, the show features actors Michael Sheen and David Tennant as fictionalized versions of themselves, along with Simon Evans, Georgia Tennant, Anna Lundberg, and Lucy Eaton. The first series aired on BBC One on 10 June 2020, followed by the second series on 4 January 2021. A Comic Relief New Year Special also debuted on the BritBox YouTube page on 31 December 2021. Additionally, a third series premiered on BritBox on 24 November 2022.
In the initial installment, actors Michael Sheen and David Tennant portray exaggerated versions of themselves as they attempt to rehearse a rendition of Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello through virtual means during lockdown. Meanwhile, director Simon struggles to maintain control over the production due to his lack of confidence. The subsequent series delves into the real lives of Michael and David after the success of Staged’s first season. Simon moves on to work on an American adaptation of the original series, but does not invite Michael and David to reprise their roles. In the third season, Simon convinces Michael and David to participate in a holiday performance of Six Characters in Search of an Author, followed by A Christmas Carol. However, the focus then shifts to a self-referential behind-the-scenes documentary titled Backstaged.
