Stand by Me (1986) is a coming-of-age drama film directed by Rob Reiner, based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella The Body. In 1985, writer Gordon ‘Gordie’ Lachance reads a newspaper article about the fatal stabbing of his childhood friend, Chris Chambers. He reminisces about an incident from when they were 12 years old, searching for the body of Ray Brower alongside their friends Teddy Duchamp and Vern Tessio, during Labor Day weekend in1959 near Castle Rock, Oregon. As a child, Gordie’s parents were preoccupied with the death of his older brother Denny and often neglected him. Unlike them, Denny showed Gordie love and attention. During this time, Vern overhears his brother Billy and friend Charlie discussing their discovery of the missing boy’s body. However, Billy is hesitant to involve the police as it may draw attention to a car theft he and Charlie committed.
When Vern shares the news of the body with his friends, they all eagerly decide to embark on a search for it, hoping to earn recognition within their community. In preparation, Chris takes his father’s gun and he and Gordie encounter two tough locals named ‘Ace’ Merrill and ‘Eyeball’, with whom Ace tries to intimidate Chris and steal Gordie’s prized Yankees cap, gifted to him by his brother Denny. The boys set off on their journey, stopping at a scrapyard for water where they are caught trespassing by the owner Milo Pressman and his dog Chopper. After escaping over a fence, Milo belittles Teddy’s mentally unwell veteran father and recalls the time he nearly burned Teddy’s ear off. This angers Teddy, but the other boys hold him back. Undeterred, the four continue on their hike as Chris encourages Gordie to pursue his passion for writing despite his father’s disapproval.
