Star Trek VIII: First Contact (1996), an American science fiction film, marked Jonathan Frakes’ debut as a feature film director. In the distant future, Captain Jean-Luc Picard is plagued by memories of his previous encounter with the Borg – in which he was assimilated by them. When Starfleet warns him of a new Borg threat to Earth, Picard’s orders are to monitor the Neutral Zone for any signs of Romulan aggression. Starfleet fears that Picard’s past experiences may cloud his judgment in the upcoming battle. As the battle rages on and Starfleet suffers heavy losses, the Enterprise crew disregards their orders and sets course for Earth where they find one Borg Cube ship holding its own against multiple Starfleet vessels. With the help of USS Defiant and its commander Worf, Picard takes command of the remaining fleet and focuses their firepower on an apparently insignificant point on the Borg ship.

As the Cube meets its demise, a smaller spherical ship is launched towards Earth. Determined to follow, the Enterprise enters a temporal vortex. Upon exiting, they are met with a startling discovery—their home planet has been transformed into a Borg-dominated world. It becomes clear that the Borg have manipulated time in an effort to prevent humanity’s first contact with alien life and assimilate them during a vulnerable period after war. Seeking to stop this threat, the Enterprise travels through the vortex and arrives on April 4, 2063—just a day before Zefram Cochrane’s historic warp drive flight. The crew recognizes that they must act quickly to protect humanity’s future and destroy the Borg sphere. In order to do so, an away team beams down to Cochrane’s ship, Phoenix, located in Bozeman, Montana. As for Cochrane’s assistant Lily Sloane, Picard arranges for her to receive medical attention aboard the Enterprise.
