Star Trek VII: Generations (1994) is the seventh installment in the popular American science fiction film franchise. The movie follows retired Starfleet officers James T. Kirk, Montgomery Scott, and Pavel Chekov as they attend the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise-B. During this mission, the starship is unexpectedly called upon to rescue two El-Aurian refugee ships caught in a massive energy ribbon. Although they are able to save some refugees, the Enterprise becomes ensnared in the ribbon as well. In a desperate attempt to free their ship, Kirk sacrifices himself and is presumed dead after being thrown into space by the ribbon’s trailing end. Fast forward to 2371, where Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew are celebrating Worf’s promotion to lieutenant commander in a holodeck simulation. However, Picard’s joy is cut short when he receives news that his brother and nephew have perished in a fire, leaving him as the last of his family line.

Enterprise responds to a distress call from a stellar observatory, where an El-Aurian named Dr. Tolian Soran has launched a probe towards a nearby star. The unfortunate result is the star’s implosion, creating a destructive shockwave that wipes out its planetary system. To make matters worse, Soran takes Enterprise engineer Geordi La Forge hostage and makes his escape on a Klingon Bird of Prey owned by the Duras sisters. Picard learns from fellow crewmember Guinan that she and Soran were both rescued El-Aurians in 2293. However, Soran’s deep-seated trauma over losing his family during the destruction of their homeworld has driven him to become fixated on returning to the energy ribbon. He believes it will lead him to the ‘Nexus’, an extra-dimensional realm where all his desires can be fulfilled outside of normal space-time.
