Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) is a sci-fi film written and produced by Harve Bennett and directed by Leonard Nimoy. It is based on the popular TV show of the same name. After a fierce battle with the powerful Khan Noonien Singh, the Enterprise returns to Earth in a damaged state. Khan had attempted to obliterate the Enterprise using an experimental terraforming tool called Genesis. Among the casualties is Spock, a close Vulcan friend of Admiral James T. Kirk. His remains are launched into space around the newly formed planet created by Genesis. Upon docking at Earth Spacedock, Dr. Leonard McCoy displays unusual behavior and gets arrested. Starfleet Admiral Morrow pays a visit to the Enterprise crew and announces that their ship will be decommissioned. He also gives strict orders not to disclose any information about Genesis as it could lead to political issues.

David Marcus, Kirk’s son and a crucial scientist involved in the development of Genesis, joins forces with Vulcan Saavik aboard the science vessel Grissom to explore the Genesis planet. To their surprise, they come across an unanticipated life form on the surface and decide to transport down. On arrival, they witness Spock, resurrected as a child by the Genesis Device without his consciousness. Marcus eventually confesses to Saavik that he utilized unstable ‘protomatter’ during the device’s construction, causing Spock to age rapidly and threatening the planet’s destruction within a few hours. Meanwhile, commander Kruge of the Klingon race intercepts intelligence about Genesis and sees it as a powerful weapon. He takes his cloaked ship to the Genesis planet, destroying Grissom, and capturing Marcus, Saavik, and young Spock.
