In Star Trek IX: Insurrection (1998), a science fiction film directed by Jonathan Frakes, Lieutenant Commander Data is temporarily transferred to an undercover mission observing the peaceful Ba’ku people. However, he experiences a malfunction and inadvertently reveals the presence of a joint Federation-Son’a task force also observing the Ba’ku. Admiral Matthew Dougherty reaches out to the USS Enterprise-E for Data’s schematics, but firmly asserts that their assistance is not necessary. Despite this, Captain Jean-Luc Picard decides to defy orders and retrieve Data with the Enterprise. As Picard investigates further into the situation, he grows suspicious of Dougherty’s insistence that they leave and orders an investigation into Data’s malfunction. In doing so, the crew uncovers that the seemingly unassuming Ba’ku are actually technologically advanced and capable of warp travel but have chosen to live simpler lives without it.

The inhabitants of the planet possess unique ‘metaphasic particles’ that grant them immortality, in contrast to the Son’a, who rely on medical technology to prolong their lives and have a decrepit appearance due to excessive cosmetic surgery. During their visit, the Enterprise crew also experience rejuvenation: Geordi La Forge’s ocular implants are no longer necessary, Worf goes through puberty again, Riker and Troi reignite their past romance, and Picard finds love with Anij, a Ba’ku woman. Picard and Data stumble upon an underwater cloaked Federation ship equipped with a large holodeck that replicates the Ba’ku village. It’s later revealed that Data was attacked by the Son’a after accidentally discovering their vessel.
