Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), an American science fiction film, is the fourth installment in the Star Trek franchise based on the TV series. In 2286, a massive cylindrical probe moves through space and emits an indecipherable signal that disables all passing ships. Upon reaching Earth, it manipulates the power grid and creates catastrophic planetary storms that block out the sun. As a result, Starfleet Command issues a distress call and advises against approaching Earth. Meanwhile, on Vulcan, the former officers of USS Enterprise are living in exile with Spock, who is still recovering from his resurrection. To face trial for their actions, they use a captured Klingon Bird of Prey to return to Earth accompanied by Spock. Upon receiving Starfleet’s warning, Spock realizes that the probe’s signal matches the extinct humpback whale song and that it will only stop causing chaos when its call is answered. Determined to answer it with a whale, the crew travels back in time using their ship’s slingshot maneuver around the Sun.
Upon their arrival in 1986, the crew is faced with a depleted power source due to the time travel maneuver. In order to conceal their ship, they activate its cloaking device and hide it in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. To execute their mission successfully, the crew divides into smaller groups: Admiral James T. Kirk and Spock set out to locate humpback whales, while Montgomery Scott, Leonard McCoy, and Hikaru Sulu work together to construct a tank for storing the needed whales. Uhura and Pavel Chekov are responsible for finding a nuclear reactor whose excess energy can be used to re-power their Klingon vessel. As Kirk and Spock come across a pair of humpback whales under the care of Dr. Gillian Taylor at a Sausalito aquarium, they discover that the whales will soon be released into the wild. After explaining their mission to Dr. Taylor, Kirk requests her assistance in tracking the whales but she refuses to cooperate. Meanwhile, Scott and McCoy trade transparent aluminium for necessary materials for the whale tank and Sulu secures transportation via a ‘Huey’ helicopter.
