Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) is an American science fiction film directed by William Shatner and based on the television series created by Gene Roddenberry. Following their ship’s shakedown cruise, the crew of the newly commissioned USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A), including Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, are taking advantage of shore leave at Yosemite National Park. However, their break is cut short as Starfleet Command orders them to rescue a human, a Klingon, and a Romulan who have been taken hostage on Nimbus III – a planet designated for diplomatic discussions between the Federation, Klingon Empire, and Romulan Star Empire. As if that wasn’t enough to handle, the ambitious Klingon Captain Klaa sees this as an opportunity to seek glory by pursuing Kirk. Upon arriving at Nimbus III, the Enterprise team discovers that Spock’s elusive half-brother Sybok is responsible for the crisis.

Having saved the hostages, the Enterprise crew is shocked when Sybok reveals his true intentions. His hostage-taking was merely a ploy to lure a starship, which he plans to use in order to reach the fabled planet Sha Ka Ree. He firmly believes that this planet is located beyond the Great Barrier, an immense energy field at the heart of the galaxy, and that it is home to God himself. To gain control of the ship, Sybok taps into his ability to reveal and heal a person’s deepest pain through a Vulcan mind meld, effectively winning over most of the crew. For McCoy, this pain stems from fulfilling his dying father’s wish to pass away only to later discover that there was actually a cure available for his illness – a guilt that has plagued him for years. As for Spock, his own pain lies in being rejected by his father at birth for being ‘too human’.
