Star vs. the Forces of Evil (2015–2019) is an American animated magical girl series created by Daron Nefcy and developed by Jordana Arkin and Dave Wasson. It aired on Disney Channel and Disney XD. Star Butterfly, a princess from Mewni and heir to the royal throne of the Butterfly Kingdom, is given the family wand on her 14th birthday, as per tradition. Despite being known for her energy and silly nature within the royal family, she accidentally sets fire to their castle. In response, King River and Queen Moon Butterfly decide to send her to Earth as a foreign exchange student for safety reasons, where she can continue her magic training. Star befriends student Marco Diaz and stays with his suburban Los Angeles family while attending Echo Creek Academy. Together they embark on many misadventures using ‘dimensional scissors’ to open portals, all while navigating school life and protecting Star’s wand from Ludo – a half-bird half-man creature from Mewni who commands a group of monsters.
As the show progresses, new and more menacing antagonists enter the scene, such as the enigmatic creature Toffee and Meteora Butterfly, the daughter of former queen Eclipsa who is part Mewman and part monster. The focus of the narrative also shifts from protecting the wand against Ludo to a larger and more intricate storyline that delves into conflicts surrounding discrimination against monsters, rulership of Mewni, its origins, and even the essence of magic itself. Throughout the series, many secrets about the Butterfly royal family are revealed, mainly involving Eclipsa Butterfly – known as the ‘Queen of Darkness’ and infamous member in their history. As seasons progress, numerous supporting characters gain more prominent roles or join the show, such as Star’s best friend Pony Head (a floating unicorn head), her ex-boyfriend Tom who is half-demon, mischievous Janna, and Hekapoo from the Magic High Commission; Queen Moon also becomes more involved in the events unfolding.
