Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

George Lucas wrote and directed Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), an epic space opera film. The Trade Federation disrupts peace in the Galactic Republic by blockading Naboo with plans to invade. Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum sends Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to negotiate with Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray. However, Darth Sidious, a Sith Lord and secret supporter of the Trade Federation, orders the Viceroy to kill the Jedi and begin their invasion using battle droids. The Jedi manage to escape and seek refuge on Naboo. During their time there, Qui-Gon encounters Jar Jar Binks, a clumsy Gungan exile who he later rescues from danger. In return for saving his life, Jar Jar agrees to help the Jedi by guiding them to Otoh Gunga, the Gungans’ underwater city.

Despite failing to persuade their leader Boss Nass to aid the surface dwellers of Naboo, they are able to use Jar Jar’s knowledge and means of transportation to reach Theed, the capital city of Naboo. Upon successfully rescuing Queen Padmé Amidala, the group sets out to reach the Republic capital planet of Coruscant. However, their Royal Starship sustains damage and experiences a malfunction in its hyperdrive while passing through the Federation blockade. In need of repairs, they land on the remote desert planet of Tatooine outside of Republic jurisdiction. Disguised as one of her handmaidens, Padmé joins Qui-Gon, Jar Jar, and astromech droid R2-D2 as they journey into the settlement of Mos Espa to acquire a new hyperdrive part. While there, they meet Watto and his slave Anakin Skywalker, a nine-year-old prodigy who has constructed a protocol droid named C-3PO.
