In the epic sci-fi film Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), directed and co-written by George Lucas, the Galactic Republic faces a new threat ten years after the events on Naboo. The Separatist movement, led by former Jedi Master Count Dooku, poses a danger to the Republic. Senator Padmé Amidala, who was once Queen of Naboo, travels to Coruscant to vote against creating an army to assist the Jedi in fighting this threat. However, upon her arrival, she narrowly escapes an assassination attempt and is placed under the protection of Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker. After foiling another assassination attempt by capturing Zam Wesell, who is later killed by her mysterious employer, Obi-Wan is ordered by the Jedi Council to find the bounty hunter while Anakin is tasked with protecting Padmé and bringing her back to Naboo. Despite being bound by the Jedi Code’s rule against attachments, Anakin and Padmé’s romantic feelings for each other continue to grow.
Obi-Wan eventually reaches the planet Kamino, an ocean world. There, he discovers a clone army being created for the Republic under the name of Sifo-Dyas, a Jedi Master who has passed away. The infamous bounty hunter Jango Fett serves as their genetic blueprint. Obi-Wan realizes that Jango is the sought-after bounty hunter and engages in a brief confrontation before placing a tracking device on his ship, Slave I. He then tails Jango and his clone son, Boba, to Geonosis. Meanwhile, Anakin is troubled by disturbing visions of his mother, Shmi, suffering and decides to return with Padmé to their home planet Tatooine in an attempt to rescue her. To their surprise, Watto reveals that he sold Shmi to local farmer Cliegg Lars, who later freed and married her. Unfortunately, Cliegg informs them that Tusken Raiders had taken Shmi captive a month prior and she most likely perished.
