Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017) is the second part of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, written and directed by Rian Johnson. It is the eighth episode in the Skywalker saga, following The Force Awakens (2015). General Leia Organa leads the Resistance forces in evacuating their base after the battle of Starkiller Base. Despite her orders, Poe Dameron initiates a costly counterattack that destroys a First Order dreadnought. The Resistance escapes into hyperspace, but the First Order has a tracking device and attacks again. Kylo Ren hesitates to fire on the lead ship upon sensing his mother’s presence, but his wingmen destroy the bridge and kill many Resistance leaders. In a moment of danger, Leia uses her Force abilities to survive in space while Vice-Admiral Holdo takes over command of the Resistance. With limited fuel, the remaining fleet is pursued by the First Order once again.

Rey tries to enlist the help of Luke Skywalker for the Resistance on Ahch-To. However, after isolating himself, Luke refuses to assist and suggests an end to the existence of Jedi. Following a nudge from R2-D2, he agrees to teach Rey three lessons on the ways of the Force. Fueled by her curiosity about her parents, Rey is drawn towards the dark side and begins communicating with Kylo through the Force, leaving both of them perplexed. Kylo reveals that Luke was wary of his strength. Confessing that he had briefly considered killing Kylo after sensing Snoke’s influence on him, Luke’s actions led to Kylo destroying his new Jedi Order. Despite this, Rey believes in Kylo’s potential for redemption and departs Ahch-To. As Luke contemplates burning down the Jedi library, he hesitates. In a surprise appearance, the spirit of his mentor Yoda appears and destroys it with a bolt of lightning.
