The show follows the last of the Jedi being hunted by the Galactic Empire as a fledgling rebellion against them emerges. Drawing inspiration from Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art for the original trilogy, Rebels introduces new characters alongside familiar faces from both the previous animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020), and the original trilogy. Comprising of four seasons, this series has been well-received and has earned various award wins and nominations. It was nominated for Best Animated Series at both the Critics’ Choice Television Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children’s Program. Additionally, Rebels holds the distinction of being the first recipient of the Saturn Award for Best Animated Series on Television, winning for its final two seasons.
Several tie-in media have been released to further develop the series’ lore, including the comic book series Kanan, the novel A New Dawn, and the Thrawn novel series. Elements, characters, and storylines from this series have also made appearances in subsequent Star Wars content. The ongoing narrative of the show can be seen in the Disney+ live-action series Ahsoka. Taking place fourteen years after the fall of the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire, a group known as the Spectres has formed on their ship, called the Ghost. They embark on secret missions against Imperial forces on Lothal and other planets under threat by the Empire.
