Stardust (2007) is a romantic fantasy adventure co-written and directed by Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman. The film is based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same title and takes place in the English village of Wall, near a stone wall that marks the border of the magical kingdom of Stormhold. Despite being forbidden to cross, Dunstan Thorne manages to deceive the guard and sets foot in the marketplace beyond. There, he meets Una, a princess enslaved by a witch who offers him a glass snowdrop in exchange for a kiss. After spending the night together, Una becomes pregnant and gives birth to Tristan nine months later. As Tristan grows up, the dying King of Stormhold throws a ruby into the sky as a test for his sons to see who will inherit his throne. The gem lands on a star, causing both of them to fall from the sky and onto Stormhold’s grounds. This leads to Prince Primus and Prince Septimus independently searching for the stone in hopes of claiming it as their own.

While in Wall, Tristan and Victoria witness a falling star, prompting him to make a promise to retrieve it in exchange for her hand in marriage. Although his mother hails from beyond the wall, he finds himself unable to pass through the guard. Fortunately, his mother has left him with a Babylon candle, capable of transporting the user to any desired location. After lighting the candle, Tristan is brought to the fallen star in human form – a woman known as Yvaine. With the help of a magical chain, he claims Yvaine and sets out to bring her to Victoria. Unfortunately, their journey is met with interference from three ancient witch sisters who intend to consume the fallen star’s heart in order to restore their youth and powers. Their leader Lamia ingests remnants of a previous star’s heart and begins her pursuit of Yvaine, creating a wayside inn as a cunning trap.
