Stargate (1994), a sci-fi action-adventure film, was directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich. In 1928, at Giza in Egypt, archaeologist Professor Paul Langford unearthed cover stones engraved with Egyptian hieroglyphs and other markings. Underneath these stones, he found a large metallic ring that served an unknown purpose. Sixty-six years later, Professor Langford’s daughter Catherine invites Egyptologist and linguist Dr. Daniel Jackson to translate the hieroglyphs. The stones are now part of a classified project overseen by Special Operations Colonel Jack O’Neil of the U.S. Air Force. With Dr. Jackson’s expertise, they discover that the hieroglyphs refer to a ‘stargate’ which uses constellations as coordinates for space travel. Upon seeing the actual Stargate device from Giza, Dr.Jackson aligns its rotating inner track with seven chevron markings on the outside using his calculations.
They arrive in a pyramid on the dry planet of Abydos. Jackson tries to find the necessary symbols for their return journey through the Stargate, but is unsuccessful. O’Neil instructs Kawalsky to establish a campsite. While exploring, Jackson encounters a large animal with a harness, which pulls him away when he approaches it. O’Neil, Kawalsky and Brown follow and stumble upon a group of humans who are mining an unknown mineral. O’Neil contacts the rest of the team to secure their basecamp. As they are led back to the city by the humans, Jackson realizes that they speak a version of Ancient Egyptian and is able to communicate with them. He discovers that this tribe believes him and his team to be representatives of their deity Ra, due to an amulet that Catherine gave him. The leader of the tribe, Kasuf, offers Jackson his daughter Sha’uri as a gift.
