Stargate SG-1 (1997–2007) is a military sci-fi adventure show that is part of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s Stargate franchise. Created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, the series is based on the 1994 film Stargate by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. Filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the show continues the story of the original movie one year after its events. The show follows SG-1, a present-day military team from Earth, as they embark on adventures to different planets through a Stargate – an alien portal located in Stargate Command (SGC), a top-secret United States Air Force base within the underground Cheyenne Mountain Complex in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In the first eight seasons, the SG teams’ main objective is to search the galaxy for alien technology and allies in order to defend Earth against the Goa’uld. This parasitic, humanoid race hails from planet P3X-888 and enslaves humans as hosts. Long ago, they abducted humans from Earth and spread them across habitable planets to pose as gods in ancient myths, particularly those of Ancient Egypt. Along their journey, SG-1 discovers that a group of highly evolved beings, called the Ancients, originally created the Stargate network millions of years prior before ascending to a higher realm and pledging to not interfere with other species. In Seasons 9 and 10, another faction of these beings known as the Ori become the main antagonists by using their powers to control other species through religious indoctrination.
