Stargate Universe (2009–2011) is a military science fiction drama series in MGM’s Stargate franchise. It follows a present-day multinational exploration team on their adventures aboard the Ancient spaceship Destiny, located billions of light years away from the Milky Way Galaxy. The team must find a way back to Earth while also navigating and surviving in their unfamiliar surroundings. To aid them in their mission, the SGC (Stargate Command) constructed Icarus base on a distant planet with a Stargate powered by naquadria deposits. The team, led by Dr. Nicholas Rush, believes that this powerful energy source can be used to dial into the Stargate using a 9-chevron address, granting them access to distant locations beyond their galaxy. However, they are unable to decipher the writing of the Ancients needed for proper dialing. In order to solve this puzzle, Dr. Rush creates a video game that attracts brilliant minds from across Earth. One of these minds is Eli Wallace, a young mathematics genius who is able to crack the code. Despite his initial reluctance.
After being introduced to the base’s military staff, including Colonel Everett Young, Colonel David Telford, First Lieutenants Matthew Scott and Tamara Johansen, and Master Sergeant Ronald Greer, Rush and Eli work together to uncover the method of dialing the ninth chevron. However, their efforts are interrupted when the Lucian Alliance launches an attack on the base. To defend themselves, Colonel Telford commands F-302 fighters and Colonel Samantha Carter oversees operations on the George Hammond. Meanwhile, the base initiates a dialing sequence to Earth in a desperate attempt to escape. However, they soon discover that Earth’s power core is on the verge of explosion. With quick thinking, Dr. Rush realizes that attempting to return to Earth would result in disaster and instead redials with the ninth chevron, opening a wormhole just as the planet explodes behind them. The survivors flee through the newly opened wormhole and find themselves aboard an ancient abandoned spacecraft known as Destiny, as discovered by Dr. Rush.
