The American superhero animated series, Static Shock (2000–2004), was based on the Milestone Media/DC Comics character of the same name. It tackled various social issues, earning praise from television critics. The show even received a Daytime Emmy nomination. However, there were some negative critiques regarding its humor and animation style being perceived as awkward and outdated. Although the series did release merchandise, it unfortunately did not sell well and was cancelled due to low sales, according to creator McDuffie. Despite this setback, the show’s success sparked renewed interest in the original comic and helped McDuffie break into the animation industry.

At just 14 years old, Virgil Hawkins resides in Dakota City with his father Robert and older sister Sharon. He’s a student at the local high school, where he can often be found hanging out with his best friend Richie Foley. His affections are currently directed towards a girl called Frieda, while he also has an ongoing feud with a bully by the name of Francis Stone (also known as ‘F-Stop’). Recently, Virgil received assistance from a gang leader named Wade who hoped to recruit him. However, due to his mother’s tragic death during a conflict between rival gangs, Virgil is hesitant to get involved with Wade’s crew. Despite this hesitation, Wade leads Virgil to a restricted area for a showdown against F-Stop and his gang. Unfortunately, their fight is cut short by the arrival of police helicopters and an explosion caused by chemical containers. This explosion results in what is now known as ‘The Big Bang’ – an event that causes mutations and grants people abilities beyond their wildest dreams. For Virgil, this means developing extraordinary powers over electricity and magnetism. Taking up the alter-ego “Static,” he joins the ranks of others affected by the gas who are now known as ‘Bang Babies’.
