Steel Magnolias (1989) is an American comedy-drama film directed by Herbert Ross. Annelle Dupuy, a shy beauty school graduate, moves to Chinquapin Parish in northwestern Louisiana, where Truvy Jones hires her to work in her home-based beauty salon. Meanwhile, M’Lynn Eatenton and her daughter, Shelby, prepare for Shelby’s wedding that is taking place later that day. M’Lynn’s husband Drum Eatenton uses a gun to scare away birds from interfering with the reception. Together with Clairee Belcher, the former mayor’s cheerful widow, they visit Truvy’s salon for hairstyling. During their visit, Shelby experiences a hypoglycemic attack due to her type 1 diabetes but quickly bounces back with the women’s assistance. M’Lynn also mentions that Shelby’s doctor advises against her having children due to her medical condition.

Shelby contemplated calling off her engagement to Jackson, fearing he might not have the opportunity to have children. Louisa ‘Ouiser’ Boudreaux, known for her grumpy and sarcastic demeanor, enters the salon and begins questioning Annelle about her past. Overwhelmed with emotion, Annelle confesses that her husband, who is avoiding the authorities, has vanished after taking her money, possessions, and vehicle. She also reveals doubts about the validity of their marriage. Showing compassion, Shelby invites Annelle to join them at the wedding reception, where she meets bartender Sammy DeSoto. At the Christmas festival that same year, Annelle has transformed from a wild rebel to a devoted Christian much to Sammy’s annoyance. Meanwhile, Clairee has purchased KPPD radio station in town.
