Stonewall (2015), an American coming-of-age drama film directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Jon Robin Baitz, follows the story of Danny Winters, a gay boy originally from Indiana. In the late 1960s, Danny flees his conservative hometown and moves to New York City. There, he is caught in a compromising position with his boyfriend by his friends before leaving. While his mother loves him, she does not stand up to her upset husband, who refuses to sign Danny’s scholarship application for Columbia University. Despite this obstacle and leaving his supportive little sister Phoebe behind, Danny still makes the journey to Greenwich Village’s Christopher Street.

Once there, he finds acceptance among a diverse group of young individuals who identify as gay or genderfluid and street people and drag queens. While out with his new friends at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, Danny witnesses police violence. Then, Trevor from the Mattachine Society asks him to dance. Later that night, Danny’s friend Ray is arrested during a police raid on the bar. The next day, Danny visits Ray at the police station and learns he was not arrested because he wasn’t cross-dressing. Struggling to find work, Danny turns to prostitution. Seeking support, he attends a meeting of the Mattachine Society and reconnects with Trevor, despite their different political views. Despite their differences, they spend the night together.
