Amidst the chaos, two soldiers are killed when an RPG is fired and another is injured when an Iraqi vehicle explodes. Fortunately, Pvt. Rico Rodriguez bravely jumps on top of PFC Tommy Burgess to protect him from danger.
As a result, Pvt. Rodriguez is severely wounded while fellow squad member Paul ‘Preacher’ Colston, a close friend of Tommy, is fatally shot in front of him. In the midst of trying to assist injured comrade Sgt. Steve Shriver, Staff Sergeant King discovers that he unintentionally caused the death of multiple Iraqi civilians. The shocking and tragic ambush results in the loss of three soldiers. Upon their return to their Texas hometown of Brazos, Brandon and Steve are honored with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart in a solemn ceremony. Following the event, a U.S. Senator pulls Brandon aside and offers assistance in any way possible.
