Suburbicon (2017)
Suburbicon (2017), an American black comedy crime film co-written by the Coen brothers, is directed by George Clooney. The story takes place in the year 1959 and opens with a glimpse into the small town of Suburbicon. Established in 1947, it has transformed into a pleasant community attracting people from all over for its peaceful way of life. Cheerful mailman Henry goes about his usual route greeting the townspeople with a smile. He eventually arrives at the home of the new residents, the Mayers family, who happen to be African-American. When Henry chats with Mrs. Mayers, he is unaware that she is his new neighbor until she reveals so. His demeanor quickly changes as he uncomfortably attempts to distance himself while conveniently ‘forgetting’ to deliver her mail.
The other residents are shocked and horrified by the arrival of their new black neighbors. In a heated town meeting, several enraged and prejudiced white individuals demand the removal of the Mayer family from their community. The all-white townspeople then gather to sign a petition aimed at forcing the Mayers out. Meanwhile, next door to the Mayers reside Rose Lodge and her identical twin sister Margaret, who is paralyzed from the waist down. Despite his reservations, Rose urges her 10-year-old son Nick to befriend the Mayers’ son Andrew. Reluctantly, Nicky visits Andrew and invites him to play catch. Later that evening, while in Nicky’s room with another man named Louis, his father Gardner informs him that he and Ira Sloan are planning to rob them.
