Sully (2016)
Directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Todd Komarnicki, Sully (2016) is an American biographical drama film based on the 2009 autobiography Highest Duty by Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles. The movie follows the events of January 15, 2009, when Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles took off in US Airways Flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport. Shortly after takeoff, their Airbus A320 collided with a flock of birds, causing serious engine damage. In a split-second decision, they determined that it was not possible to reach any nearby airports such as Teterboro Airport and made the daring choice to land the plane on the Hudson River. Miraculously, all 155 passengers and crew members were able to evacuate safely despite minor injuries.
While remaining in New York City for investigative purposes, Sully discovers that initial findings from ACARS indicate the left engine was operating at idle power. This would theoretically allow for a safe landing at either LaGuardia or Teterboro airports. The NTSB has also conducted confidential simulations which confirm this possibility. However, both Sully and Jeff strongly disagree and tensions rise between the two parties. The NTSB suspects pilot error as a possible cause, a scenario that could have devastating consequences for Sully’s career and reputation. In order to prove his point, Sully arranges for live pilots to rerun the simulations with successful landings.
