Sunshine (2007) is a science fiction psychological thriller film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. In the year 2057, Earth is facing a crisis as the Sun is nearing its end and causing global freezing. To save humanity, eight international astronauts embark on a mission aboard Icarus II – a spacecraft equipped with a mirrored stellar bomb designed to reignite the dying star. However, as they pass Mercury, they receive a distress signal from Icarus I – a previous attempt that was lost seven years ago. Despite objections from Mace, Physicist Capa suggests changing course to intercept Icarus I and possibly utilize their payload for another attempt at saving the Sun. With Trey’s calculations and plotting, the crew sets out to make repairs on the reflective panels damaged during their journey towards Icarus I.
While this leads to incineration of communication towers and destruction of their oxygen garden and air reserves, Cassie manages to angle the damaged shields into shadow, providing some safety for Captain Kaneda and Capa as they work to fix the damage. After the emergency autopilot reverts back to its original position, Kaneda instructs Capa to withdraw. Despite Kaneda’s attempt to fix the last panel, he tragically loses his life in the process. Trey feels responsible for Kaneda’s demise and Searle administers sedatives, deeming him a potential suicide risk. With limited oxygen supply hindering their mission, Icarus II is forced to dock with Icarus I. While Capa, Searle, Mace, and Harvey search the spacecraft, Cassie and Corazon remain on board Icarus II with Trey.
