Sunshine on Leith (2013)
Sunshine on Leith (2013) is a romantic musical film, directed by Dexter Fletcher. It begins in Afghanistan, where an APC is on patrol with nervous passengers such as Davy Henshaw and Ally, who fear for their survival (‘Sky Takes the Soul’) before being ambushed. Some time later, the recently discharged pair return to Edinburgh and their families after their tour (‘I’m on my Way’). Ally reunites with his girlfriend Liz, who happens to be Davy’s sister. On their first night back, Liz introduces Davy to her English colleague Yvonne at a pub. The two women share some drunken storytelling, a Scottish tradition (‘Over and Done With’). After being set up on a blind date, Davy and Yvonne begin a romantic relationship (‘Misty Blue’), while Ally and Liz contemplate marriage in the future (‘Make My Heart Fly’).
Davy’s father, Robert ‘Rab’ Henshaw, discovers a surprising letter from Eilidh, a daughter he never knew existed. Later, he meets with her after her mother’s passing. Secretly attending the funeral, Rab is caught off guard when his friend Ally reveals his plans to propose to Liz at Davy’s parents’ 25th wedding anniversary party. Seeking advice on how to pop the question, Ally receives tips from a bartender who overhears their conversation (‘Let’s Get Married’). During the celebration, Rab serenades his wife Jean with ‘Oh Jean’. However, the happy occasion takes a turn when Jean discovers the letter still in Rab’s jacket and confronts him about his past infidelity. Meanwhile, Ally goes through with his proposal to Liz but gets rejected. The tense atmosphere erupts into chaos and Yvonne is taken aback by Davy’s violent outburst.
