Survival of the Dead (2009)

Survival of the Dead (2009), a horror film, marks the sixth installment in George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead series and was his final work before passing away in 2017. The opening introduces National Guard Sergeant ‘Nicotine’ Crockett and his comrades Kenny, Francisco, and Tomboy, who desert their posts to rob the protagonists from the previous film. At the same time, Plum Island off the shore of Delaware is home to two rival Irish families – the O’Flynns and Muldoons. Led by Patrick O’Flynn, the O’Flynns gather a group to eliminate the undead on the island. However, tensions arise when they discover that the Muldoons are keeping their undead loved ones safe in hopes of a cure being found. After a brief gunfight resulting in one woman’s death, Patrick surrenders his weapons as he cannot bring himself to kill his own children turned into zombies, upon the arrival of the Muldoon posse.

Seamus Muldoon initially considers taking Patrick’s life, until Janet, Patrick’s daughter, suggests he instead be banished from the island. In the company of Boy, who has joined the National Guardsmen, they unearth information about Plum Island from a video created by Patrick. Following its instructions, they make their way to a nearby dock where they encounter O’Flynn and his men attempting to rob the Guardsmen. A violent shootout ensues. Amidst the chaos, Francisco bravely seizes a ferry boat and in doing so, fends off a zombie by biting off its finger. Despite their efforts, all of O’Flynn’s men except for Patrick are killed by zombies. With no other options left, Patrick boards the ferry with them. During the journey to Plum Island, he reveals that he had previously sent others there in order to provoke the Muldoons.
