Surviving Christmas (2004)
Directed by Mike Mitchell, Surviving Christmas (2004) is a romantic comedy film centered around wealthy advertising executive Drew Latham. In an attempt to surprise his girlfriend Missy before the holidays, he presents her with first-class tickets to Fiji. However, she is taken aback by his desire to spend Christmas away from his family. Feeling neglected and unimportant in their relationship, Missy decides to end things and cites Drew’s failure to introduce her to his family as proof of his lack of commitment. To make amends, Drew has a Cartier bracelet delivered via his assistant. As the holiday draws nearer and Drew finds himself alone, he desperately reaches out to all of his acquaintances for a place to stay on Christmas. Unfortunately, he discovers that he doesn’t have any close enough relationships to score an invite.
In a moment of desperation, Drew seeks out Missy’s therapist Dr. Freeman at the airport and asks for a therapy session. The therapist advises him to write down all of his grievances and burn them at the Valcos’ former childhood home. As Drew displays suspicious behavior, Tom Valco creeps up from behind and uses a shovel to render him unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, they grant him access to the house. Excitingly, he recognizes his old room and impulsively offers Tom $250,000 to join them for Christmas. After accepting the offer, Drew’s lawyer drafts a contract that stipulates the Valcos must play the role of his family. The following day, Drew insists on the family going out together to purchase a Christmas tree and requires Tom to wear a Santa hat in public.
