Suspiria (1977), an Italian supernatural horror film, was directed by Dario Argento and co-written with Daria Nicolodi. The inspiration for the film partially came from Thomas De Quincey’s 1845 essay Suspiria de Profundis. Suzy Bannion, an American ballet student, arrives at the renowned Tanz Akademie in Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany during a heavy storm. As she approaches the school, she witnesses another student, Pat Hingle, fleeing in terror. However, Suzy is denied entry and must stay in town for the night. Meanwhile, Pat seeks refuge at her friend’s apartment and shares with her the unsettling events that occurred at the school. Suddenly, Pat is attacked by a shadowy figure and fatally stabbed. Unfortunately, her friend attempts to warn others but also meets a tragic fate at the hands of the murderer.

The next morning, Suzy heads back to school and is greeted by Miss Tanner, the head instructor, and Madame Blanc, the deputy headmistress. Pavlos, one of the school’s servants, is also introduced to her by Tanner. In addition, she meets her new roommate Sara and classmate Olga. During her time at the school, Suzy has an unsettling encounter with one of the matrons who happens to be Blanc’s nephew Albert. Unfortunately, during a dance class, Suzy faints and wakes up later in the company of her classmates in a room where they have been forced to sleep due to maggots raining down from the ceiling. The reason for this is a shipment of spoiled food that was stored in the attic. As if this wasn’t enough chaos for one day, it turns out that Olga has kicked Suzy out of their shared apartment and she now has to stay in Sara’s room next door.
