Luca Guadagnino’s supernatural horror film, Suspiria (2018), was written by David Kajganich and draws inspiration from Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian film of the same name. Set in West Berlin during the German Autumn of 1977, it follows the story of Susie Bannion, an American from a Mennonite family in Ohio who enrolls at the Markos Dance Academy. The academy is still reeling from the mysterious disappearance of one of its students, Patricia Hingle. Patricia had confided in her psychotherapist, Josef Klemperer, about her belief that the academy is run by a coven of witches. Through journals left in Klemperer’s office, Patricia describes The Three Mothers: Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum, and Mater Lachrymarum – a trio of witches that predate Christianity. Initially skeptical of Patricia’s claims, Klemperer becomes increasingly suspicious of the academy after her sudden disappearance.
During a practice session, Olga, a student from the Soviet Union, gets upset with Madame Blanc, the lead choreographer. She storms out of the studio but ends up getting locked in a mirrored room. In the meantime, Blanc continues with the rehearsal and Susie’s intense dancing starts to physically harm Olga. A group of teachers from the academy then use large hooks to remove Olga’s injured body from the room. Later on, these teachers hold an informal vote to decide who will take over as leader of their coven. The two candidates are Madame Blanc and Mother Markos, an old and severely disfigured witch who has been in charge for a long time and after whom the academy is named. In the end, Markos is chosen as the new leader through popular vote.
