After being falsely convicted and sent to Australia by corrupt Judge Turpin, who desired his wife Lucy, Barker assumes the identity of ‘Sweeney Todd’ and returns to his old shop above Nellie Lovett’s meat pie shop on Fleet Street. Lovett, who harbors unrequited love for him, informs Todd that after his exile, Turpin drove Lucy to suicide and took their daughter Johanna as his ward. Seeking revenge, Todd reopens his barbershop upon receiving his old straight razors from Mrs. Lovett.
As he wanders the streets, Anthony is captivated by Johanna’s singing from a window above. However, his enjoyment is short-lived when Turpin and his sidekick Bamford intervene. Meanwhile, Adolfo Pirelli, a rival barber and con artist, is shamed publicly by Todd in front of Bamford. To make matters worse, Pirelli recognizes Todd as his former apprentice and tries to use this information to his advantage. Enraged by the betrayal, Todd ends up killing Pirelli. Shocked but understanding of Todd’s actions, Lovett becomes emotionally attached to Pirelli’s assistant Toby Ragg and takes him under her wing. Turpin sets his sights on marrying Johanna and turns to Todd for grooming services. However, before Todd can follow through with his deadly plans, Anthony arrives and reveals their own plans with Johanna, causing Turpin to throw her into an insane asylum and storm out in anger.
