One day, he meets Sara Deever, a woman unlike anyone he has ever met. When she cheats on her driving test and he tries to confront her, she charms him with her request for him to spend a month with her, promising to change his life for the better. On the first night of November, after Nelson is fired and dumped on the same day, they sleep together. The next day, Sara’s close friend Chaz arrives and refers to Nelson as ‘November’. As they spend more time together throughout the month of November, they fall in love. Along the way, Nelson reflects on his past while also making a new friend in Abner, a 10-year-old boy without a father.
Eventually, Nelson realizes his love for Sara and proposes marriage. However, it comes to light that Sara is suffering from terminal cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Due to her fear of him having to witness her death, she asks him to leave. Later on, Sara confides in Chaz about Nelson’s proposal. Chaz mentions that this wasn’t the first time a man has proposed to her, hinting at Sara’s past engagement history. Sara confirms this but adds that it was the first time she felt inclined to say yes. Despite her feelings for Nelson, she decides to end the relationship in order to spare him from pain. In accordance with her wishes, Nelson leaves but later surprises her by returning during Thanksgiving with gifts reminiscent of their happy memories together.
