Swept Away (2002)
Swept Away (2002) is a romantic comedy adventure film written and directed by Guy Ritchie. It is a remake of the 1974 Italian film of the same name by Lina Wertmüller. The wealthy and spoiled Amber Leighton, wife of a millionaire, joins two other couples on a private cruise from Italy to Greece. She immediately takes a strong dislike to Giuseppe, one of the deckhands, and relentlessly insults him throughout their journey. Despite Giuseppe’s warnings about an approaching storm, Amber insists on going out on a dinghy for fun. However, their trip takes an unexpected turn when they run out of gas and eventually wash ashore on a deserted island due to a series of mishaps caused by Amber’s behavior towards Giuseppe.
While stranded on the island, Giuseppe’s survival skills give him the upper hand in their interactions. As time passes and their roles reverse, he becomes increasingly dominant while Amber becomes submissive and cowering in response. This dynamic leads to a sense of intimacy between them. In fact, Amber realizes that she is surprisingly content on the island with Giuseppe. So when they spot a boat anchored in the bay, she hides, hoping to avoid being rescued. Eventually, both are rescued and return to their regular lives. However, despite his attempts to reconnect with Amber, Giuseppe receives no reply from her messages.
