Swept Away (1974)
Swept Away (1974), the Italian romantic adventure comedy drama written and directed by Lina Wertmüller, tells the story of a wealthy woman named Raffaella Pavone Lanzetti who is vacationing on a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea with friends. While enjoying activities such as swimming and sunbathing, Raffaella also proudly espouses her beliefs about her social class and dismisses the political left. This angers Gennarino, one of the deckhands who is a dedicated communist but keeps his opinions to himself to maintain his job. Despite Raffaella’s insulting behavior, she convinces Gennarino to take her out on a dinghy to meet up with their friends who have already left. However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when their motor breaks down in the middle of the sea with no land in sight.
After a night at sea, Gennarino gets the motor running once again, though their location remains a mystery. In the distance, they spot an island and head towards it, causing damage to their dinghy in the process. Upon reaching shore, they discover that the island is deserted. Raffaella, accustomed to being catered to, starts giving orders to Gennarino who finally snaps and refuses to assist her any further. She responds with insults, but he retaliates just as fiercely and they both go off to explore the island on their own. Gennarino quickly adapts by catching and cooking lobsters for sustenance. As time passes, their roles begin to reverse – while Raffaella now relies on him for food, Gennarino sees her as his servant, convinced that women are meant to serve men. He even goes so far as to make her wash his underwear as a display of dominance.
