The story follows the adventures of four young friends, Peter Müller, Thomas Berger, Arvid and Otto, as they visit the popular swing club Bismarck. The group enjoys themselves immensely, dancing and listening to the music. However, when Peter returns home, he finds his mother arguing with a member of the Nazi party known as the Blockleiter. The tense situation escalates when Herr Knopp from the local Gestapo arrives and abruptly dismisses the Blockleiter. He then begins questioning Frau Müller about her late husband’s associates. Sadly, Herr Müller’s health was irreparably damaged following an interrogation by Nazi agents after being accused of being a communist.
While at Arvid’s house, Thomas accidentally damages one of his prized records. This causes Arvid to become upset and kick out Thomas, Peter, and Otto. In an attempt to make things right with Arvid, Peter and Thomas end up stealing a radio from a bakery. However, Peter is caught while Thomas manages to escape. Herr Knopp, who has feelings for Peter’s mother, intervenes on Peter’s behalf. As a result, Peter must join the Hitler Youth as a way of repaying Herr Knopp’s kindness. Thomas also joins the HJ and convinces Peter that they can still enjoy the perks of being Swing Kids while being part of the Hitler Youth. Unfortunately, Arvid is later confronted by a group of Hitler Youth members on the street, including his former friend Emil who is also now part of the HJ.
