Swing Vote (2008)
Swing Vote (2008) is an American comedy-drama film directed by Joshua Michael Stern, depicting a fictional U.S. presidential election. In this alternate version of the year 2008, the entire contest rests on the vote of one man – Ernest ‘Bud’ Johnson from Texico, New Mexico. Bud is a simple, unemployed man with no interest in politics until his twelve-year-old daughter Molly inspires him to take a more serious approach to life. Despite her efforts, Bud remains apathetic towards voting and Molly takes matters into her own hands on election day by attempting to cast a ballot for her father at their local polling place. However, due to unplugged voting machines, the results are inconclusive and Bud’s vote becomes pivotal in deciding which candidate will receive New Mexico’s electoral college votes.
In New Mexico, the popular vote between the two major candidates has reached a tie. This puts Bud in the position to decide the next president of the United States. Both current Republican leader Andrew Carington Boone and opposing Democratic nominee Vermont Senator Donald Greenleaf have been actively courting Bud’s vote. They are assisted by their respective campaign managers, Martin Fox and Art Crumb. Unfortunately, Bud’s true opinions (or lack thereof) have been misinterpreted by the media, leading to both candidates altering their positions on key issues. Surprisingly, Democrats take a stance against abortion and illegal immigration while Republicans show support for environmental policies and same-sex marriage. As they distance themselves from manipulative tactics urged by their advisors, both candidates earn Bud’s admiration.
