Swingers (1996)

The American buddy comedy film Swingers (1996) follows the story of unemployed actors living in the ‘eastside’ of Hollywood, California during the swing revival of the 1990s. Mike Peters, a struggling comedian who left New York in search of success in Los Angeles, is still reeling from his six-year relationship with Michelle ending six months ago. To cheer him up, his womanizing friend Trent and other aspiring actor buddies try to help him get back into the social scene. As they hang out, Mike confides in his friend Rob about how much he misses Michelle and how she hasn’t reached out to him. Rob explains that women have a way of knowing not to call their exes until they’ve completely moved on.

In an effort to aid Mike’s recovery, Trent persuades him to take an impromptu trip to Las Vegas. Despite successfully charming two waitresses, Mike’s fixation on Michelle disrupts Trent’s plans. The women appear interested, yet Mike’s inability to focus on anything else dampens the atmosphere as he shares details about her. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Mike, Rob and their circle of friends partake in activities such as golfing, playing video games and going out; all united by their pursuit of success in the entertainment industry. The night progresses with bar hopping, a stop at a party and eventually an after-hours spot where Trent showcases his skill in wooing women. This inspires Mike to approach a woman named Nikki and secure her phone number. His comrades advise him to wait at least two days before making contact.
