Tannen is a former professional golfer living in California, estranged from his three children who reside in New York with their mother Kathleen and stepfather, attorney Mitchell. In an effort to reconnect with his kids, Tannen decides to take them on a Mediterranean cruise. Despite still having feelings for Kathleen, he hopes to prove himself as a changed man, but she remains unconvinced. However, during the cruise, Tannen becomes preoccupied with finding potential romantic partners, including French archaeologist Marie, often leaving his kids to entertain themselves. He arranges for a table for five at dinner, secretly hoping to find an adult female companion for the fifth seat.
The youngest son, Truman-Paul, has a learning disability that Tannen continuously pushes him to overcome. Meanwhile, the adopted oldest son, Trung, is caught stealing food from the ship’s galley and attempting to purchase alcohol with a fake ID. Tilde, their sister, is a wise and empathetic girl, but too young to take on a parental role for her brothers. As Tannen struggles to fulfill his role as a father figure, he suggests that the kids view him as more of a “friend” and even use the name ‘J.P.’ The family’s journey takes a positive turn when they reach Rome, their first port-of-call. Together they have an enjoyable time and Marie is impressed by Tannen’s loving nature as a parent.
