Taboo (2017)
Taboo (2017) is a BBC television drama series that premiered on BBC One in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2017 and on FX in the United States on 10 January 2017. The eight-episode series, created by Steven Knight and Tom Hardy along with his father, Chips Hardy, is based on a story written by the two Hardys. After spending twelve years in Africa, adventurer and merchant James Delaney returns to England following his father’s death in 1814. Set against the backdrop of the end of the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States, Delaney’s journey is accompanied by supernatural elements due to his mystical and magical powers acquired during his time in Africa. These powers allow him to communicate with the dead and experience visions, adding an eerie tone to the story. Additionally, numerous phrases from Ghana Twi language used by Akan people are incorporated into the script during mystical flashback scenes, further delving into Hardy’s intriguing character.
Delaney sports a striking tattoo of the Sankofa bird on his neck, a mystical symbol that appears frequently as carvings during his time in London. The image depicts the bird turning its head backwards to retrieve an egg from its back. This potent Asante symbol represents recurring themes of taboos in Delaney’s life, from incest and mass murder to his unscrupulous actions. Essentially, it conveys the message that ‘it is not forbidden to retrieve what could be lost’. Delaney is portrayed as a dangerous man, engaging in brutal knife fights that result in multiple killings in a dramatic fashion.
