Taking Lives (2004) is an American psychological thriller film directed by D. J. Caruso. In the early 1980s, teenagers Martin Asher and Matt Soulsby meet on a bus to Mont-Laurier, Quebec. The vehicle breaks down, so they obtain a car, which later gets a flat tire. As Matt fixes the tire, Martin notices their similar height and shoves him into the path of an oncoming truck, causing the death of both Matt and the driver. Martin then takes Matt’s guitar and clothes and continues on foot, imitating his singing voice. Twenty years pass and FBI profiler Illeana Scott is called in by Inspector Leclair to assist Montreal authorities in capturing a serial killer who takes on his victims’ identities to travel unnoticed across North America.
Illeana questions art dealer James Costa, who witnessed the killer’s most recent murder. James creates a sketch of the killer, allowing authorities to locate his apartment where they discover a decaying corpse chained in the ceiling. Rebecca, Martin’s mother, is convinced she spotted her supposedly deceased son on a ferry headed to Quebec City. This sighting prompts the exhumation of a body previously believed to be Martin’s, and he is immediately placed at the top of the suspect list. During an interview at Rebecca’s house, Illeana delves into Martin’s past and learns that he was an unwanted child who struggled after the loss of his beloved twin brother. As she searches the home for clues, Illeana stumbles upon a secret room hidden behind a cabinet.
